Taiwan's textile output decreased year-on-year in 2012

According to the report of the Taiwan Science and Technology Intelligence Bureau (ITIS) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the output value of Taiwan's textile industry and related industries may decline by 8.1% year-on-year to 460 billion Taiwan dollars this year.

This report focuses on textile sub-sectors such as fabrics, man-made fibers and ready-made garments. It is expected that the output value of man-made fibers in Taiwan will decrease by 11.1% year-on-year to NT$144.9 billion in 2012, and the output value of fabrics may decrease by 7.5% to NT$289.92 billion.

However, the output value of the garments and accessories industry may increase to NT$25.9 billion.

In the third quarter of this year, the contribution rate of man-made fibers, fabrics and garments to the output value of Taiwan's textile industry was 30.2%, 63.4% and 6.4% respectively. During the three-month period, the output value of man-made fibers decreased by 7.42% compared with the previous quarter. It decreased by 15% year-on-year to NT$33.83 billion. Similarly, the output value of fabrics decreased by 3.5% from the previous quarter. It decreased by 5% year-on-year to NT$71.2 billion.

However, due to the relatively low cost of apparel and the increase in sales volume, the value of garments increased by 24.5% from the previous quarter and increased to NT$7.2 billion in July-September 2012, but the clothing production decreased by 1.6% year-on-year. From July to September, Taiwan’s textile and apparel industry production dropped by 8% year-on-year to NT$112.2 billion.
